DEATH OF THE REV. GILBERT TURNBULL 1839 |
---|
We perceive by the Sydney papers, that the Rev. Gilbert Turnbull, the esteemed missionary formerly stationed at Bangalore, in the Madras Presidency, died on the 19th March, at the residence of William Wright, Esq., at the Surrey Hills. The Sydney "Colonist" states that Mr. Turnbull arrived in New South Wales in bad health, but his constitution was too far gone to rally by the change.
"His death-bed was a scene of Christian triumph and spiritual peace. The praises of his Redeemer were the latest accents that dwelt upon his lips. The deceased was an Independent and spoke the native Hindoo language with fluency; indeed he might have been called a native of the country, as he arrived there from England when only about one year old. His career was one of eminent usefulness as a missionary. He has left an amiable and affectionate wife to sorrow for his loss."
